Bill Blass Between Past and Future
Bill Blass between the past and the future As many of us surely know, Bill Blass is an emblem for the American fashion world, his clientage including, among others, Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Kissinger, and Gloria Vanderbilt. As many of us surely know, Bill Blass is an emblem for the American fashion world, his including, among others, Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Kissinger, and Gloria Vanderbilt.
It seems that nowadays, after being bought by Peacock International Holdings LLC, this fashion house is in trouble. The former Blass design director Prabal Gurung has left Bill Blass and created a line of his own, which, as it seems, has a great success in fashion world, as magazines recognize it: WWD, Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, and Fashion Week Daily. After the latest collection, last year, which was a colored, happy and maybe with a little bit of quirkiness (printed dresses, cashmere sweater coats, silver-striped gowns and gray jersey) now Bill Blass is in real danger. Before Peter Som took over at Bill Blass, former Blass design director Prabal Gurung was in charge of Bill Blass collection for Spring 2008. And now he puts his own signature on a line of clothes and it seems he does it well. "At Bill Blass, I learned the way clothes are supposed to be made there are no shortcuts. It's just well-finished clothes. That's the kind of approach I'm taking it's not about being trendy." It's been months since the post-Peter Som saga at Bill Blass got a new chapter, and maybe it's time for Bill Blass to do it too. But a very straight question easily comes in mind: who will do that? Maybe sometimes is easier to be on your own that to succeed as a throne as controversial as Bill Blass. Its past is not a safety net for the future, that's why some people think that a no-name designer is the most appropriate do be in charge for the future. |
